Motorists have been leaving the gates of a level crossing on the busy Crewe to Kidsgrove line open, prompting safety warnings from Network Rail.
Gates at the Barthomley level crossing in Cheshire have been left open 38 times in the last 12 months by motorists and horseback riders, according to reports.
Network Rail warned this could lead to children and animals wandering onto the track and potentially in the path of one of up to four trains per hour.
Passengers are also being disrupted as train drivers are stopping at the crossing to close the gates helping keep the community and crossing users safe.
The crossing has gates which have to be manually opened and closed and has warning lights on each side. It provides a popular route between Radway Green and Barthomley.
