The benefit of having a steam locomotive that came out of traffic straight into preservation has never been more starkly shown than has happened recently during the return to steam of both the first and last Rebuilt Merchant Navy class Pacifics. The last, 35028 "Clan Line", was withdrawn in working order and has just emerged from what was merely a required overhaul and its main line test run, which we see here at Chester and Wellington, ran like clockwork. The first, 35018 "British India Line", has had to be virtually rebuilt again from scratch after 53 years out of traffic and Carnforth's heroic efforts to put her back on the main line have been thwarted by a number of minor defects, her most recent loaded test run having had to be postponed. All Bulleid enthusiasts must wish them well in their task to put the only unique Bulleid Rebuild back at work alongside her most fortunate sister.
