The first steam-hauled "British Pullman" - still better known to enthusiasts as the VSOE - was to have been a bit special as John Cameron's Gresley A4 Pacific no 60009 "Union of South Africa", now probably into its last year of main line work, was booked to haul it around the Surrey Lunchtime Circular. Sadly, a week or so earlier it was announced that the celebrated engine wouldn't be making the trip south from Bury and that "another" locomotive would replace it. That turned out to be the regular engine, 35028 "Clan Line" which, magnificent as it is in its own way, isn't really "special' on the Pullmans. Nevertheless, here it is seen at Staines and then Redhill, where the scene shows the new Platform 0 and the changes to the track layout that make Platform 1 a bay.
